McMenamins The Old Hangout: Reviews & Ratings
Fun tiki themed bar in the bottom level of an amazing venue. We shared the churros . Music was a bit disappointing since it wasn't consistently exotica or surf rock, but the atmosphere is beautiful!
This whole place is awesome! Seems to have a bar on every level. We choose the old hang out! Got a lot of cool old school tiki vibes going on , great selection of cocktails and they got their own craft beers!
This is a very cool eclectic place to hang out. The different lounge spaces makes it feel like you're bar hopping! Love the variety of chic drink options and the bar tenders are very good at their jobs. The decor is great. I love all the different light fixtures in the tiki bar. I prefer weeknights as weekends are pretty busy. Prices are high but that is the case most places.
I came here for a family gathering. I always come to Tacoma and say that this building is a hotel, bar, or restaurant. The interior of the building is very atmospheric, and you can take the elevator to the bar on the other floor. We went to the Spanish bar on the second floor. The server lady was pleasant and friendly. Our table was by the entrance and it got cold every time people came and went. We had a total of seven adults, but everyone except me ordered cocktails and alcohol. I took a sip of my husband's cocktail, and it was very delicious. I think the drink was pink***. I ordered a Zeus Lamb Burger and shared it with my hubby. The taste was okay. I want to come here again and look at other floors.
The building is beautiful and historic, and stands out when you’re walking around or even looking around Tacoma. We walked in the entrance and asked how many bars and restaurants there were and we were told about four and a half bars/restaurants so we just went down every floor to investigate and ended up on the bottom floor, which is a tiki bar. The bar was huge and very beautiful with a little waterfall and even thunder and lightning that happened every once in a while. We we each had one drink,a Mai Tai and a Mermaid Spit. They were delicious and quite strong. It was a great afternoon hang out.
Such a cool place! The food was ok though. I ordered a Hawaii burger but just got a cheeseburger. When I pointed out to the waiter, he brought me grilled pineapple slices to put on the burger…
McMenimans is a company that buys old buildings like schools and retrofits them to become restaurants, bars and hotels all in the same building. Each big room gets changed into its own space, so you can go to many different bars inside of the same building. This location is in Tacoma, only a few minutes away from Tacoma Dome. Parking outside here is always a mess at night so it's better to be dropped off here. The Old Hangout is the tiki lounge on the bottom floor that is known for its unique drinks. They have a smaller menu, with small bites being it's main draw. They have about 3 or 4 dozen tables and service here is really good. Most people come here to drink, but many of the drinks are extremely sugary. The churros were very good, but the Tokyo Tots not so much. This is a great place to come with a big group of friends to hang out or even on a date.
Been to the Elks Temple a couple of times now. It’s a wonderfully re-tooled old building, with a couple of different bar/restaurant options on each floor but our fave is the lower level Old Hangout. Dim, moody, a sorta tiki bar meets dive bar meets lounge joint. It’s got a long rectangular bar in the middle, with red leather (?) booths and some other tables around the perimeter, a couple of cool neon lights and old artwork, and even a fire pit and a waterfall feature. Pretty cool. Good service, decent snacks and a memorable backdrop, just be warned; it’s pretty dark in here!
